This beautifully
designed 1930s-style, sparkling white building is stark and spacious
within – the perfect setting for a collection of innovative design.
Incredibly user-friendly, the museum consists of just two levels with a
minimum of exhibits. The first floor holds the Review Collection (state-of-the-art innovations from around the world) and the Temporary Exhibition Gallery . Temporary exhibitions for 2000 include Bauhaus Dessau (10 Feb-4 June), an in-depth look at the significance of the period when the Bauhaus was based in Dessau (1925-32), the Life and Work of Buckminster Fuller (15 June-15 Oct) and Five Designs of Mr Brunel (26 Oct-25 Feb 2001).
The Collection Gallery ,
devoted to the study of design for mass production, is housed on the
second floor. Arranged thematically, it concentrates on different types
of product. The car is one such focus – look for the wooden model made
up from drawings by the architect and designer Le Corbusier dating from
1928. There are also early televisions, washing machines, telephones,
chairs (including one designed by Rennie Mackintosh) and a collection
of tableware. Temporary shows in the Collection Gallery during 2000
include Dr Martens Airwair (Mar-May) and Hong Kong Architecture: Aesthetic of Connection (1 June-31 July). The Blue Print Caf? ,
which shares the building, with its balcony overlooking the Thames, is
an appropriately stylish establishment (but be warned, it’s a
restaurant rather than a caf?, with prices to match).

‘Eclipse’ is a fast moving spectacle of illusions, marvels, comedy and dance, which takes the audience on a journey beyond time and imagination. This début show, for the newly opened Caesar’s Casino Resort, promises to put all other stage spectaculars in the shade. Speciality acts have been gathered from all over the globe and include the hilarious American juggler, tightrope-walker and comedian Holy Howling Holly and Arabesque – four amazing contortionists from Mongolia. This breathtaking, dynamic and magical show is sure to pack in the pizzazz.

After one of the most publicised construction periods and anticipated openings in recent memory, Bacar has finally opened for business, and it is quickly becoming the hot new restaurant in town. The brainchild of a collection of savvy industry veterans, Bacar is a stylish, two-level brick-walled space where wine is king. Chef Arnold Eric Wong prepares smart, seasonal American fare, ranging from wood-fired pizzas to Muscovy duck and vegetable potpie. But the real draw here is the wine list, which features more than 1000 varieties – including many hard-to-find selections – all impressively displayed in a three-story ‘wine wall’.

This exhibition presents the works of 42 eminent 20th-century photographers spread over some 200 vintage photographs. This century was the first to be dominated by photographers – from early photography to current digital media – with all of these images having the capacity to trigger strong responses. Included here are works by Diane Arbus, Pat Brassington, Max Dupain, William Klein, Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz and Weegee.

Pass through the gates of this seldom visited museum, located just 100 yards from the marauding crowds of St Mark’s Square, and you will enter a place of extraordinary peace and quiet. The beautiful Romanesque cloister of Sant’ Apollonia is a perfect spot in which to sit, read or soak up the spring sunshine. More adventurous visitors can make their way towards the museum itself, a curious mix of paintings, sculptures and sacred objects from Venice’s churches and convents. There is also a space devoted to interesting contemporary religious art – Chagall’s extraordinary ‘Bible’ print series was shown last year.

Catalonia’s most important folk music event, the annual Tradicionàrius celebration is run as a rolling festival that lasts for three months. Traditional musicians and folk followers from all over Catalonia gravitate to the Centre Artesà Tradicionàrius in the Gràcia district, where regular live events are held every week until Easter. There’s a concert and dance every Friday night and on most Thursdays, plus instrumental, dance and voice workshops, exhibitions and an open bar every weekday afternoon.

Ballet: Swan Lake June 26, 2010

For the third time in eight months, Swan Lake returns to the Grand Theatre. Such anodyne repetition is a sad reflection of the lack of imagination of the theatre and the narrow tastes of Shanghai audiences. The performers are the Kremlin State Ballet on their now regular trip out east. Definitely not world class, the troupe fairly thumps across the stage. When the smaller theatres of Shanghai make a bold move to bring something fresh to the stage, it has been proved to work. Maybe the Grand Theatre is just too grand.

Undoubtedly one of the
best places to see bands in London, due largely to the fact that the
steeply sloping floor does allow you to actually see them without
having to stand on tippy-toes. It’s surprisingly intimate for a venue
its size (it holds over 4,000), though when the hall is at anywhere
less than two-thirds full the cavernous interior means the sound
quality is muddied by echo. Conveniently, there are bars at almost
every corner of the hall.
