Pass through the gates of this seldom visited museum, located just 100 yards from the marauding crowds of St Mark’s Square, and you will enter a place of extraordinary peace and quiet. The beautiful Romanesque cloister of Sant’ Apollonia is a perfect spot in which to sit, read or soak up the spring sunshine. More adventurous visitors can make their way towards the museum itself, a curious mix of paintings, sculptures and sacred objects from Venice’s churches and convents. There is also a space devoted to interesting contemporary religious art – Chagall’s extraordinary ‘Bible’ print series was shown last year.

Catalonia’s most important folk music event, the annual Tradicionàrius celebration is run as a rolling festival that lasts for three months. Traditional musicians and folk followers from all over Catalonia gravitate to the Centre Artesà Tradicionàrius in the Gràcia district, where regular live events are held every week until Easter. There’s a concert and dance every Friday night and on most Thursdays, plus instrumental, dance and voice workshops, exhibitions and an open bar every weekday afternoon.
