Ballet: Swan Lake June 26, 2010

For the third time in eight months, Swan Lake returns to the Grand Theatre. Such anodyne repetition is a sad reflection of the lack of imagination of the theatre and the narrow tastes of Shanghai audiences. The performers are the Kremlin State Ballet on their now regular trip out east. Definitely not world class, the troupe fairly thumps across the stage. When the smaller theatres of Shanghai make a bold move to bring something fresh to the stage, it has been proved to work. Maybe the Grand Theatre is just too grand.

Undoubtedly one of the
best places to see bands in London, due largely to the fact that the
steeply sloping floor does allow you to actually see them without
having to stand on tippy-toes. It’s surprisingly intimate for a venue
its size (it holds over 4,000), though when the hall is at anywhere
less than two-thirds full the cavernous interior means the sound
quality is muddied by echo. Conveniently, there are bars at almost
every corner of the hall.

Calle Obispo #109, entre Oficios y Mercaderes (620216)
Open 24hrs daily. Admission free.
La Mina has a restaurant and two cafés; waiters and bands are shared with Al Cappuccino next door. The patios, located on Plaza de Armas, are a great spot to relax and listen to live son until 11pm followed by boleros until the early hours. The downside is that they can be rather touristy, though. .

The old rule about piano players rarely agreeing to play together only makes this annual piano-fest all the more special. Held the Monday between the two Jazz Fest weekends, it brings together the cream of New Orleans and New Orleans-influenced jazz pianists. Eddie Bo, Marcia Ball, Jon Cleary, Huey ‘Piano’ Smith and Joe Krown (the reigning jazz organist) are just the tip of this piano iceberg. Special guest is Hadda Brooks, the 84-year-old queen of boogie-woogie piano. The all-night party includes a barbecue and photography exhibition.
