It is hard to believe that the intricately decorated cotton hangings that make up this new show at the Textile Museum were produced in the 9th and 10th centuries, since their ink-drawn patterns and gilded edges seem as neat as something produced on a Macintosh computer. In addition to the religious invocations and elegies the words of these artifacts present, the show focuses on the patterns the words create, as well as the amazing craft of the weavers and goldsmiths that all contributed to this unusual and often breathtaking art.

One of a cluster of cultural institutions in the leafy district of Dahlem, Das Museum für Ostasiatische Kunst houses one of the finest collections of East Asian art in the world. Extra space created by recent renovation work has allowed the curators to devote two whole rooms to ceramics from Korea and Vietnam, and several more to Chinese and Japanese painting from the last three centuries. The Soviet army seized more than 90 per cent of the original collection at the end of WW2 and most of the items currently on display have been acquired over the last 50 years.

One of the most successful singer-songwriters of the present generation, Madrileño Ismael Serrano has not looked back since his first hit album, the 1997 ‘Atrapados en azul’ (‘Trapped in Blue’). With meaningful, barbed but also poetic lyrics and his guitar slung over his shoulder, Serrano recalls Silvio Rodríguez, Serrat, Aute and Paco Ibañez. His message is still one of solidarity, aimed at those most in need whom he helps by participating in benefit concerts and performing in godforsaken places where music often does reach.

‘Cantuccio’ is the local word for ‘biscotti di Prato’, the hard, almond biscuits that are traditionally dipped in Vin Santo. It is also the name of a tiny new shop in the Santo Spirito district of Florence. A stone’s thrown from the famous piazza, the shop specialises in all sorts of carefully-sourced biscuits, cakes, jams, chocolate, dessert wines and speciality coffees and teas. Excellent for an unusual present or plain self-indulgence.

Billed as ‘Anti-Christmas 2000′, the Arena plays host to bands representing the various genres that make up the dark world of Metal. Headliners Morbid Angel are currently the number one practitioners of Death Metal. Heavily influenced by Slayer, this Florida-based band, led by the enigmatic Trey Azagthoth, will treat devotees to selections from their sixth album ‘Gateways to Annihilation’. Among the various support acts mention should be made of Viking-Metallers Enslaved and the Polish Black Metal outfit Behemoth. Bring your earplugs.

Pitti Gola e Cantina is the one place worth visiting among the row of mediocre, touristy bars outside the Pitti Palace. It has been an excellent wine and foodie bookshop for some time, but has only recently become a wine bar where you can enjoy a snack or a light meal. Classic Tuscan dishes are on offer, as well as some more original delights such as the asparagus or artichoke flan, ‘millefoglie’ of aubergine and game terrine. There is a mouth-watering selection of unusual and well-sourced cheeses and a good choice of wines by the glass.
