Photographer, writer, filmmaker, composer and musician, Gordon Parks certainly deserves the title Renaissance Man. ‘Half Past Autumn: The Art of Gordon Parks’ is a record of his search for humanity in the face of intolerance. It includes 200 black-and-white and colour photographs from Parks’ award-winning career as a photographer. His association with fashion magazine Vogue and the 20 years he spent with Life magazine are chronicled here in photographs, portraits and photo essays covering poverty in Harlem, the 1960s’ black civil rights movement and other social issues of the 20th century.

This quirky bar-restaurant is currently one of the top favourites among the cruising class. A complete break from the rest of the chrome and glass décor beloved by other top establishments, Joe Diamond’s offers lashings of velvet, overstuffed armchairs and accommodating ottomans that surround the low wooden tables. It’s like walking into a mad North African gothic dream. Understandably, both restaurant and bar do a roaring trade. The restaurant needs booking ahead but the bar can be breasted any time.

‘Fosse’ the musical stars the choreography of 9 time award-winner Bob Fosse, known for his thoroughly modern style and signature moves such as snapping fingers, rakishly tilted bowler hats, swivelling hips, and rolling shoulders. The production is a journey in song and dance through Bob Fosse’s extraordinary career and stars 32 of Broadway’s hottest and most talented dancers. ‘Fosse’ includes rarely seen dance numbers from the choreographer’s earliest works, as well as classic Fosse numbers like ‘Steam Heat’, ‘Big Spender’, ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’, ‘Dancin Man’ and ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas with the first three cantatas of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, first performed to celebrate the onset of the jolly season in Leipzig in 1734. It’s a narrative extravaganza used by the composer to tell the story of the Nativity through the eyes of St Luke and St Matthew, performed in elegant baroque style. Georg Christoph Biller conducts the orchestra and the Tomanerchor Leipzig, the resident choir from the St Thomas Church in the city the piece was first performed.

It is a tradition in San Francisco as inextricable as the giant Christmas tree in the middle of Union Square. American Conservatory Theater’s annual production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ draws people of all ages from miles away looking to get into the seasonal spirit. This faithfully adapted production of Dickens’ classic does not disappoint. Raye Birke is a perennial fave in his role as Scrooge (he also directs), giving a haunting performance in this tale of spiritual redemption. And who knows, your spirit may just be redeemed, too.

You don’t have to be a devotee of the songs of ABBA to enjoy this musical, but it certainly won’t hurt. The campy hit from London features some 27 chart-topping tunes by the Swedish supergroup, constructed around an incidental plot about a former wild child of the 1970s and her daughter’s impending wedding. The production is admittedly about little else than the music of ABBA and is a hit because it does not endeavor to be anything more than what it is – mindless fun. Book through West end theatre breaks to see it at the Prince Of Wales Theatre.
