Fire has always been a bit of an obsession with humankind. When the principles of light began to be understood over two centuries ago, it had a profound effect on work, life and the arts. The van Gogh Museum tries to highlight this time of profound change, using 300 objects. Pieces on display include the Statue of Liberty from the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris, the first projection lantern, Monet’s ‘Rouen Cathedral: The Portal (in the morning)’ and the first sharp photos of the moon. Van Gogh’s ‘Potato Eaters’ occupies centre stage.

The Christmas Nativity is an important feature of the Italian festive season, and Venetians queue round the block to see the best on show. Most of the larger churches have their own – Frari, San Giovanni e Paolo, Carmini, San Giacomo dall’Orio – but the most fascinating this year will surely be the Naples crib at the Chiesa di San Barnaba. Neapolitans do nativities better than anyone, so this is one not to be missed.

Situated in a stunning art nouveau building, this restaurant is worth visiting for the tiled walls and stained glass alone. One wall is virtually a giant wine rack and hundreds of wines from all over the world are available by the glass or bottle. To go with the wine, there’s an enormous spread of antipasti and a good selection of pasta dishes. All this and beautiful young Italian waiters…

Already one of the swankiest spots in the Theater District for cocktails and atypical fare, Ponzu has upped their cool quotient with the addition of in-house DJs on hand to set the tone from Wednesday to Saturday. The turntables are worked by a list of guest DJs from San Francisco and the Bay Area, each bringing their particular stack of vinyl to the scene – from deep house to ambient urban groove to classic soul. To further entice the late-night groove junkies, Ponzu offers a menu of low-priced cocktails and small plates during its Feng Shui Hour, 10pm to midnight.

Bizart, in co-ordination with a Belgium foundation and Beijing Gallery archives, stage a retrospective of the last 20 years of contemporary figurative painting in China. The exhibition will feature 80 artworks by 35 artists, including sculpture, oil paintings, drawing, prints and photography. By covering a wide range of artists the idea is to avoid a one-dimensional survey and instead enable the audience to view the pluralistic development in Chinese art over the last two decades.

When the Wu-Tang Clan appeared in 1993, the release of their début album ‘Enter the 36 Chambers’ sent shock waves throughout the hip hop community. With their sparse, dark funk and bracingly violent martial arts imagery, the group immediately attracted a following. However, the band self-destructed within a year of their record’s release, with rappers Method Man and Ol’ Dirty Bastard going onto solo success in their own rights. This come-back gig should be a mind-blower.

Rome’s youth choir celebrate their patron saint with a little help from Janácek, a modern master who knew a thing or two about sacred choral music. The Santa Cecilia Youth Choir led by Martino Faggiani performs Janácek’s Mass in B flat minor, accompanied by organist Concezio Panone. Few things could be more pleasant than a free, mid-morning concert in one of Rome’s most OTT Baroque churches. Before the event, be sure to take a peek at the Rococo exuberance of the stucco-laden Santa Cecilia chapel to the right of the main altar.
