The Roosters have snared the spectacular Craig Wing for the season and, if their captain Brad Fittler fires up, they will go a long way before they choke as usual. The Eagles are the result of a forced merger between North Sydney and Manly in the off-season – a merger not without irony, as Manly began life as a breakaway club from North Sydney many decades ago. So far, the Eagles have opened their season by trampling over mighty Newcastle and may prove to be the superclub everyone feared.

Husband and wife team, Charles and Ray Eames promised affordable but high quality furniture at the end of World War II. They were proponents of mass-production of furnishings and accessories, as the ideal way to spread this philosophy throughout America. They designed among other things, collapsible sofas, storage units and seating for airports and stadia. This exhibition entitled ‘A Legacy of Invention’ brings together the focus of the Eames’ work, that of functionality and the belief that design could improve people’s lives.

The soul of Paris is rooted in a 2000-year history filled with controversy, revolution, passion, and another revolution. You couldn’t ignore the past here if you tried. Monuments seem to grace each and every place, and Roman ruins mark the heart of today’s Quartier Latin. Perhaps it’s time to hit the hall of mirrors at Versailles if there’s not enough of you to go around. Or, if history’s not your bent, enjoy Paris as the shopping mecca that it is today. For those who feel the need to repent their capitalist cravings, Paris is full of churches and cathedrals where you can do penance—but perhaps the best cure for one too many hours at Galeries Lafayette is an afternoon in the green of one of the city’s many parks.

This hugely impressive out-of-town museum has come up with an exhibition that matches in ambition the wide scope of its collection. Through the chosen 100 paintings of the show’s title, the museum’s curators are attempting to trace 500 years of Western art history from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Many of the big names are here, including Breughel, Renoir, Chagall and Warhol and it’s a rare treat to see so many masterworks under one roof.

Taking places in the salubrious setting of the grounds of Trinity College, the Trinity Ball was, for many years, the social event of the student calender. Acres of press coverage and insurance problems saw the Ball disappear for a few years, but it’s back with a vengeance and remodelled into an open air festival of music and dance. This year’s line up, at the various stages and marquees dotted around the campus, include the Tindersticks, Wannadies, Elastica, Trevor Nelson, Bass Odyssey, Stevie G, Sister Bliss, Dean Wilson and others. This is a strictly ticket event with hours of queueing to look forward to if you leave it too late.

Claimed by many to be a far superior carnival to the commercial monster that is now the Love Parade, the Christopher Street Day is Berlin’s big gay festival. The route is from the Kurfürstendamm (or Ku’damm as it is known) through Potsdamer Platz to the Brandenburg Gate and finally the Siegesäule (Gold Else) in the Tiergarten. Wacky costumes on all sides guaranteed floats, Brazilian dance music, DJs Mo (Berlin) and Solaris (Leipzig) and even the full cast from the musical the ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’.

Any excuse to get out of town when it’s steaming hot is a good one, and there are plenty of places for a cool retreat near Florence. Villa Demidoff at Pratolino, a half-hour bus ride north of the city, is such a spot. The villa itself – dating from the 16th-century – is a bit of a mess, but the enormous gardens are a rural delight. One marvels that has survived is Buontalenti’s massive statue of the Appennino, a stone giant rising from a fountain. It’s a great place for a picnic, and concerts are held in the summer months.
