Fart jokes and phallic innuendo might be a strange way to celebrate the 19th birthday of an animated film festival but, if you decide to open it with ‘South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut’, that’s what you get. Despite that, the festival will prove that there’s far more to animation than Homer Simpson’s furrowed brow, providing an ideal forum for wannabe cartoonists to learn the tricks of the trade, with numerous workshops and guests speakers including ‘Star Wars’ animation director Rob Coleman. A competition for Belgian shorts (films, not trousers) will also be launched.

PT Barnum once remarked that ‘no one ever went bankrupt underestimating the intelligence of the American people’, and in its 130th edition, the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ is still coining it. Although it has shed some of the freak-show stylings of yesteryear, there are still plenty of old standards to bring back memories – sequined ladies taming tigers and dancing with elephants, clowns being fired out of cannons, lads doing oddball gymnastics on bicycles and acrobats performing death-defying physical poetry. As tantalisingly scary and awe-inspiring as it ever was, the circus offers you a chance to share your own childhood with your kids.

Ignore the shoddy sex museums of Amsterdam, and take the porn train to Rotterdam to visit this ultimately more tasteful exhibition of 600 erotic artifacts. Paintings, porcelains, fans, furniture and opium pipes come together to reflect a long lost world of reproductive grace.

Believe it or not, this show, drawn from the never-before-seen archives of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, has been in the planning stages since the turn of the century. Finally, a couple of wars and an economic boom later, the works here have been dusted off and hung up for the very first time. It’s well worth the wait – what we have here is nothing less than a complete history of Japanese art, tracing its independent development and subsequent comingling with the European tradition.
