Bringing the girlfriend home to meet the family is one of those anxiety-producing scenarios that’s always been ripe for satire. And playwright Paul Osborn makes the most of it in ‘Mornings At Seven’, a comic American classic about a fellow named Homer Bolton, who brings his fiancée Myrtle home to meet his elderly parents, his sister and the extended family, in what turns out to be a hilarious comedy of errors.

Bembé is the Spanish word for gathering, party or jam, and in response to the sudden skyrocketing popularity of Latin music in the US, Café Teatro has begun hosting just that every Friday night. Every El Bembé features salsa and merengue dance lessons, as well as music by Latin DJs and live bands, and Latin food. The events are being held at the Jorge Hernández Cultural Center in Boston’s South End, an elegant ballroom-type venue.

Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, which is currently host to a big John Singer Sargent exhibition, salutes another American artist by the name of Martin Johnson Heade. A nineteenth-century master, Heade specialised in still-life paintings and is still considered by many to be the greatest still-life painter of his day.

The Smothers Brothers October 19, 2008

Back in the more innocent America of the 1960s, when humour was goofy and teenagers wouldn’t dream of taking automatic weapons to school, the Smothers Brothers ruled prime time TV with their light, but often edgy wit and musical sketches. While they’d resort to lame sibling rivalry gags to keep their ratings up, Tom and Dick Smothers often used their clean-cut family-friendly image to aim pointed barbs at the Nixon administration and the war in Vietnam – so much so that their show was ultimately cancelled. While they may be better remembered for tricks with yo-yos and such like, the Smothers Brothers are a classic icon of an age whose very confusion was its most interesting characteristic.

Romance October 17, 2008

From the start of shooting, Catherine Breillat’s new film has been the object of close media scrutiny – less to do with her reputation as an uncompromising director than with its highly graphic sexual content. Its central figure is Marie (Caroline Ducey), who can’t get satisfaction from her impotent boyfriend and so has casual sex with Paulo (well-hung Italian porn star Rocco Siffredi – wooden in more ways than one) and an obscurely liberating sado-masochistic dalliance with Robert (François Berléand). The really graphic stuff lasts in total no more than a few minutes, but the effect is profoundly unsettling. ‘Romance’ is a bleak and pessimistic film, coloured by a schematic, prejudiced view of love and sex that verges on paranoia. Junkichi Mukai and Japanese Houses October 10, 2008

Junkichi Mukai was a landscape artist who paid particular attention to architectural features in his work. What makes this exhibition so fascinating – and so poignant – is not so much the undoubted high quality of the work itself but the fact that so much of what is depicted has now vanished without trace. The ruthless development of modern Japan means that though the pictures were painted this century they might as well be depicting a foreign country. Expect to overhear cries of ‘natsukashii!’ (‘oh how this makes me feel nostalgic!’) as you walk round.

The initials stand for the Albi-Tarn Electroacoustic Music Group, a six-man folk music band from southern France. GMEA have recorded several popular Provençal folk tales from native speakers of the Occitan language from Nice, the Auvergne and Gascony, and improvise freely over the pre-recorded tapes. Their instruments of choice range from ones invented by themselves, called concurbiphones, to traditional reed instruments and sophisticated electronic equipment. They are here as part of a massive Provençal music festival being held in Catalonia over the next three months.
