This unconventional exhibition uses art, photographs and other documents to chart Germany’s post-war history – from a female perspective. Divided into five sections, ‘Politea’ takes visitors through the seminal(!) events of the last 50 years, highlighting the way they have shaped women’s lives. The struggle to find food in 1945, the Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle), the fight against abortion laws in the 1960s, and life after the fall of the Wall are all dealt with in detail. Also worth seeing is ‘Schlammwäsche’ (‘Dirty Washing’), an installation by Christine Merton that incorporates a large tin bath, vast amounts of sludge and a poem by Paul Celan.
