The most widely publicised visiting exhibition of the season deserves all its hype. The selection of largely 19th- and 20th-century works from the Musée d’Orsay’s massive collection presents a broad cross-section of recent European art history, and is arranged under themed headings, so as to make the subject matter and its evolution more readily comprehensible to local audiences. All the artists you’d expect are here, including Monet, Cézanne, Klimt and Dégas.

A new fish restaurant has just opened in Piazza Santo Spirito under the same ownership as next door mythical Caffe Ricchi. Small and elegant with tables in the piazza, the restaurant offers a short menu of unfussy dishes using the freshest of the day’s catch. Antipasti include mussels in a tasty tomato sauce and Beccafico, a delicious warm seafood salad and sardines with pine nuts, raisins and orange. Risotto is cooked with squid ink and papardelle with fat shrimps, baby lobster and courgette flowers. Locally-caught, succulent scampi is simply grilled while skate is cooked in the oven on a bed of potatoes, tomatoes and black olives.

This unconventional exhibition uses art, photographs and other documents to chart Germany’s post-war history – from a female perspective. Divided into five sections, ‘Politea’ takes visitors through the seminal(!) events of the last 50 years, highlighting the way they have shaped women’s lives. The struggle to find food in 1945, the Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle), the fight against abortion laws in the 1960s, and life after the fall of the Wall are all dealt with in detail. Also worth seeing is ‘Schlammwäsche’ (‘Dirty Washing’), an installation by Christine Merton that incorporates a large tin bath, vast amounts of sludge and a poem by Paul Celan.
