Hong Kong: after the Changeover April 9, 2008

After the festivities were over and all the “Royal”s and “Her Majesty”s removed, Hong Kong didn’t seem any different to me than when I had arrived. Real change in the city will take time to show, as a local reminded me. Many Honkies were waiting to see how the PRC-appointed leadership would react to the annual June protests marking the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989. This event struck close to the heart of many Hong Kong residents; although many considered themselves Chinese, they dreaded being subject to the military whims of the PRC government. The arrival of the Chinese military vehicles before the fireworks display did little to allay doubts. Many residents questioned the justification for sending anti-personnel vehicles and an unusually large honour guard to the formalities, and many are equally nervous as they wait to discover what Hong Kong’s future will hold.
