Queen Beatrix has been given the job of guest curator of an exhibition of contemporary Dutch art as a gift to celebrate her 20th anniversary of her accession to the throne. She shows her savvy by bringing together paintings, drawings, sculptures, textiles and assemblages by all the big Dutchnames from the past 50 years. An accompanying exhibition entitled ‘Dutch Glory’ gives an overview of Dutch print work during the same period.

This thought-provoking exhibition includes a series of photographs depicting scenes and landscapes in northern Iran. Held at one of the city’s hippest art venues, it is the work of Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami whose aim is to have viewers ‘understand things without actually seeing them’. Kiarostsami travelled the length and breadth of the country in search of themes. The result is a collection of prints taken in remote, ‘spiritually-charged’ locations that utilise light, the changing seasons and ‘the human condition’.

While drinking the night away has never been a particularly hazardous enterprise in Vienna, finding somewhere half-way decent in the early hours can be awkward. Now for those who go the distance, the centrally located Maxim, formerly a cheesey ‘high class’ nightspot, runs chill out sessions starting at 4am Fridays and Saturdays. Two floors supply house and more relaxing sounds to a varied crowd sprawled amid the low lighting and velour. Easy to find just across the Ring from the Opera and ladies get in free.

Though he’s been in the business for half a century, it was only in the early 1990s that Edward Bramah, a former tea taster, set up this unusual museum to chart the history of tea and coffee drinking. The new premises allow the two infusions to be studied separately, and their important role in British society to be documented. There’s also an impressive collection of coffee makers and teapots (including the world’s largest) and a cafÈ where you can try out the real thing.

1980s hits ‘Is She Really Going Out With Him’ and ‘Different For Girls’ suggested a glorious pop future for Joe Jackson. However, Beat Crazy – his follow-up collection of 1930s jive tunes – confounded industry logic and Jackson’s been pushing his musical boundaries and his fans’ patience ever since. Touring to support ‘Night and Day II’, a self-proclaimed concept album, Jackson is a charming and assured performer. But he and his followers are travelling such a unique and precious path that newcomers may feel like unwanted guests.

Saturdays for Young People is the name of the courses that AR.CO, the Centre for Art and Visual Communication near the castle of Saint George is organising every weekend during term time. There are workshops in a variety of disciplines, including photography (shooting, developing and printing), painting and drawing, jewellery design and ceramics, all for children aged between 10 and 15. The cost is 40,000 escudos for a course of Saturdays, from Jan 20 to Mar 17 or Apr 7 to Jun 9, but it is possible to arrange to attend just a few sessions.

Football: Real Madrid vs Villarreal July 22, 2010

An interesting tussle this. Real, who have already blown more than one chance to practically clinch the title, face upstarts Villarreal, the season’s ‘revelation team’. While several points clear at the top of the table, a recently lacklustre Real cannot afford any slip-ups as others are nagging at their heels. Little Villarreal, in only their second-ever season in the top flight, are up for UEFA qualification and looking good, especially since signing ace Argentinean striker Martín Palermo from Boca Juniors. Probably a home win, but don’t bet on it.

Konoba July 20, 2010

Once again it’s down to the Croats to supply Vienna with affordable fish and seafood. In a pleasant stripped wood and po-mo ventilation duct setting, Konoba brings a refreshing taste of the Dalmatian coast to Vienna with dishes such as the hefty Buzara – mussels in a potent wine, garlic, olive oil and parsley sauce. Garlic tends to be prominent here – often to the detriment of the superbly grilled sea bass and bream – so ask the staff to go easy on it. The edge can also be removed by downing plenty of fruity Dalmatian whites such as Laski Rizling and Dingac.
