Marsh’s Library, built in 1701, was the first public library in Ireland and is one of Dublin’s best-kept secrets. Hidden away at the back of St Patrick’s Cathedral, it is sometimes forgotten on the traditional tourist trails. Sir William Robinson, the architect responsible the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, designed the building and its beautiful dark oak interior houses four main collections of 16th, 17th and early 18th-century books. Regular exhibitions are organised around theological and historical themes and also prominently feature Jonathan Swift who, as Dean of St Patrick’s, was a governor of the Library.

The Austrian Museum for Folk Culture can always be relied upon for its unusual presentations of the more pedestrian aspects of daily life. In this new exhibition the focus is on idleness and the strategies people in Vienna have used over the past two centuries to free themselves of the rigours of work. Especially appropriate in a city obsessed with ‘Gemütlichkeit’ or cosiness, the exhibition brings together paintings, photographs and objects mapping the city’s successful approach to sloth and invites visitors to ask themselves what actually happens when we’re doing nothing.

The international image of the Chinese as hard-working, bespectacled, bantamweight businessmen is not entirely true. Plenty of gyms have sprung up in the past two years and body building is a growing phenomenon. To see how they fare in the worldwide beefcake stakes you can watch them flex their ‘impressive’ grease-smothered limbs in a bid to be crowned Hong Kong’s champion.

The 1970s revival shows no signs of dying as long as bands such at Glamtastic 2000 continue to pull in the crowds. Five lovers of the Glam Rock era – Collie Wobble, Nikki Glitz, Brian Bone, Jonnie Lightening and Stevie Vivacious – entertain their flare-wearing, platform-teetering fans with the best that Marc Bolan et al had to offer. Known as the decade that taste forgot, glam rock was a means of total escape and fantasy, and Glamtastic 2000 aren’t about to let us forget it.

Going back more than 30 years, guitarist Robert Fripp’s King Crimson were for many years progressive rock’s definitive exponents having débuted with ‘In the Court of the Crimson King’ and over 30 albums to their credit.
